The short answer is no. There is no Uber in Cozumel. But you do have other options. Let’s take a look at the best ways to get around the island.

Uber in Cozumel

Uber’s presence in Cozumel has been met with strong resistance from local taxi organizations. These groups have been vocal and active in keeping Uber out, making the island a challenging market for the ride-sharing giant.

Uber has been navigating a complex legal environment to establish itself in Quintana Roo, the state where Cozumel is located. Although they’ve recently achieved some legal milestones, it’s not all smooth sailing.

Local taxi services are pushing for Uber to follow the same set of rules they do, adding another layer of complexity.

The ongoing battle between traditional taxi services and Uber makes it unlikely we’ll have Uber in Cozumel in the near future. For the time being, plan on using more traditional forms of transport.

Taxis are not permitted to pick up passengers at the airport. However, the rules about where they can pick you up nearby have been a moving target.

Recently, the regulations shifted back to allowing taxis to pick up passengers just a block away from the airport. If you’re craving some excellent tacos, make your way across the street to Diego’s Tacos and grab a taxi from there.

Pre-Book a Shuttle

The most straightforward way to reach your hotel is to sort out your ride ahead of time. Once you clear customs and immigration, head left. You’ll see a sea of people holding signs.

Spot the one with your name or the name of the shuttle company if you’re on a shared ride and you’re all set. If you hit a snag, don’t worry. Airport staff are more than willing to assist.

If you opt to wing it, you can still book a shuttle upon arrival. After exiting customs, you’ll see various shuttle booths. Pick from eTransfers, CozuShuttle, or FlexShuttle. They’re pretty much the same deal.

  • Shared Shuttle: Around $8 USD per person
  • Private Shuttle: Approximately $26 USD
  • Note: Prices can fluctuate

After payment, you’ll get a ticket. Head outside, turn right, and find the line corresponding to your chosen shuttle company. You’ll be on your way shortly.

Pro Tips

  • Booking: It’s wise to arrange your transport in advance to sidestep any last-minute stress.
  • Tipping: Though not mandatory, a tip of about $20 MXN ($1 USD) per bag or per person is a courteous touch.
  • Stops on the way to your hotel: Drivers are often willing to make a quick stop at a supermarket or liquor store to pick up a few things. Be sure to tip well!

How to Get Around Cozumel

Okay, so if you can’t call an Uber, how can you get around Cozumel? There are many options for Cozumel transportation.

Taxis

Taxis are easy to find, affordable, and generally safe, making them a popular choice for getting around Cozumel.

Before you jump into a taxi, it’s crucial to confirm the fare. Cozumel taxis operate on set prices rather than meters, so knowing the cost upfront can save you from any unexpected charges.

Drivers have a price sheet that lists the standard fares for various destinations across the island. Feel free to ask to see this sheet to ensure the quoted price matches the official rates.

Confirming the price and being aware of the set fares not only keeps you in the know but also contributes to a hassle-free and enjoyable ride.

Renting a car in Cozumel offers you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace. If you’re arriving by air, you’ll find several car rental options right at the airport.

For those coming in by ferry, there are kiosks near the terminal where you can arrange for a car.

My favorite company for renting cars is Discover Cars. They not only offer the best prices but also provide cost-effective insurance options, which is a big deal because buying insurance is required when you’re renting a car in Mexico.

Scooter Rental

Renting scooters in Cozumel is a popular option for many tourists, drawn by the allure of zipping around the island with the wind in their hair.

However, it’s important to know that this mode of transport comes with significant risks. I can’t stress this enough — I don’t recommend renting scooters in Cozumel. The island sees frequent and often severe scooter accidents involving tourists on a weekly basis.

If you decide to rent a scooter anyway, exercise extreme caution. The roads can be tricky, and you’ll be sharing them with cars and other larger vehicles. Make sure you’re familiar with the scooter’s controls and always wear a helmet.

And it should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. Don’t mix drinking with scooter driving. Cozumel police take drinking and driving laws very seriously.

Bicycles

Renting bicycles in Cozumel is a unique and eco-friendly way to take in the island’s beauty. One of the great perks is the availability of bike paths that stretch across significant portions of the island.

These paths provide a safer and more enjoyable cycling experience, allowing you to explore Cozumel’s scenic spots without the stress of navigating through heavy traffic.

Private Driver

Hiring a private driver in Cozumel offers a personalized and convenient way to see the island.

You have a couple of options here: you can either book a private tour that comes with a driver, or you can hire a taxi for the entire day.

Taking the public bus in Cozumel is an affordable way to get around, especially if your focus is on the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods.

A ride only costs 10 pesos, making it a budget-friendly option. All buses make a stop at the Chedraui grocery store on Melgar Avenue. This can be a convenient spot for picking up supplies or simply a useful landmark for navigating the bus routes.

The buses don’t extend their routes to the south or north hotel zones. So, if you’re staying in those areas or plan to visit them, you’ll need to consider other transportation options like taxis.

Walking

Walking is a viable and enjoyable way to get around downtown Cozumel. The streets are well laid out and the atmosphere is friendly, making it a pleasant experience to explore on foot.

If you’re staying in the north hotel zone, many places are within a mile’s walk, so it’s doable if you’re up for a bit of exercise.

However, the south hotel zone is a different story. The distance makes it impractical to walk, so you’ll likely need to rely on other forms of transportation to get there.

One of the perks of walking in Cozumel is the proximity to the water. If the heat starts to get to you, there are numerous public beaches along Melgar, the main waterfront street, where you can take a quick dip to cool off.

Mototaxis

Mototaxis, often called tuk-tuks, are mini taxis that you’ll see around the island. They typically won’t pick up tourists unless you look like a local.

My understanding is that the taxi union only allows them to work away from the main tourist centers and only for locals.

Getting to Cozumel

Getting to Cozumel is relatively straightforward, and you’ve got a few options depending on where you’re coming from and what kind of experience you’re after.

By Air

The most direct route is flying into Cozumel International Airport (CZM). Several airlines operate flights to Cozumel, both from within Mexico and from international locations. Once you land, you’re just a short ride away from the main areas of the island.

Another way to get to Cozumel is by flying into Cancun International Airport and then taking the ADO bus to Playa del Carmen. The ADO bus terminal is conveniently located right at the airport, making it easy to catch a ride.

The bus trip to Playa del Carmen takes around an hour and is comfortable and air-conditioned.

Tulum opened its international airport in December 2023. You can now fly into Tulum and make your way to Cozumel from there. It takes about the same amount of time as flying into Cozumel.

By Ferry from Playa del Carmen

If you’re flying into Cancun or are already in the Riviera Maya region, taking a ferry from Playa del Carmen is a popular choice. Many people take a day trip from Tulum or Playa del Carmen to Cozumel.

The ferry terminal in Playa is easily accessible, and the ride to Cozumel takes about 45 minutes. Ferries are frequent, comfortable, and often come with onboard entertainment. Take a sweater, though. Every ferry I’ve ridden has been freezing.

By Cruise Ship

Cozumel is a popular stop for many Caribbean cruises. It’s one of the things Cozumel is known for. If you’re arriving by cruise ship, you’ll dock at one of the island’s three piers. From there, it’s easy to catch a taxi or arrange a tour to explore the island for the day.
