I was a little nervous about going on a submarine. But Atlantis Submarines has a stellar safety record with 24 years of incident-free operations in Cozumel.

Getting to Atlantis’ Starting Point
Atlantis’ central location, right in front of the Casa del Mar Hotel, makes it easy to get to from anywhere on the island.
- From Puerta Maya: Head left towards the North for about four blocks.
- From the International Port: A quick two-block walk to the left heading North.
- From Punta Langosta Cruise Pier: Grab a taxi right outside the terminal.
- From the Ferry Terminal: If you’re coming over from Tulum or the Riviera Maya, you’ll find taxis waiting outside the terminal.
- From Anywhere Else in Cozumel: Taxis are readily available to take you to the submarine’s location quickly. Note that there is no Uber or Lyft in Cozumel.
What to Expect on the Atlantis Submarine Cozumel Tour
The entire tour lasts about two hours. However, a lot of that time is going to and from the submarine. You’ll spend about 45 minutes inside the submarine.
Boat Ride to the Submarine
After meeting up at Atlantis’ facilities, you’ll be picked up from their pier. The ride out to the sub is beautiful.
If you’re lucky, you may see dolphins. I didn’t see any on my trip, but I’ve heard it sometimes happens so keep your camera handy.
Boarding the Sub
Once you arrive at the submarine, you’ll transfer from the boat. It’s a little slippery so make sure you’re wearing shoes that are easy to walk in. The crew helps you so it’s not as scary as I expected.
You’ll then climb down the 12-step ladder and find your seat. Don’t worry, all the seats have great views.
Exploring the Ocean
The Atlantis Submarine ride offers an up-close look at Cozumel’s underwater life. As the sub dives, you’ll see a variety of sea creatures and coral formations through your own window.
You even pass by a shipwreck, which was my favorite part.
The ride is smooth, with clear views that make it easy to spot marine life, including fish, sea turtles, and occasionally sharks. Of course, you’ll also see the beautiful coral formations.
It really feels like entering a whole new world. We didn’t see any sharks, which I found to be disappointing. But we saw plenty of other things, including sea turtles and eels.
There are crocodiles in Cozumel, but it’s highly unlikely you’ll see one. Still, it could happen.
Even with the submarine full, I didn’t feel crowded. Maybe because I was so engrossed with the view out the window.
Returning to Shore
I gotta admit, the boat ride back to shore was a letdown. I mean, the ride is fine and the scenery is gorgeous. But after being underwater, I didn’t want to return to real life.
