Heading to Mexico and wondering about Cozumel weather in May? You’re in the right place.

I lived in Cozumel for nearly two years, so I’ve experienced all the seasons.

May is when Cozumel really starts feeling like summer. The days are hot, the ocean is warm, and brief tropical showers start to make an appearance.

It’s also just before peak tourist season, so you’ll find fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere on the island.

Here’s everything you need to know about Cozumel’s weather in May.

Overview of Cozumel Weather in May

  • Average High Temperature: Approximately 85°F (29°C)
  • Average Low Temperature: Around 75°F (24°C)
  • Water Temperature: Typically near 81°F (27°C)
  • Rainfall: About 4.4 inches (11.2 cm)
  • Humidity: Averages around 78%

May brings hot days and warm nights, perfect for beach time and water activities. Showers are more common than in the winter months, but they’re usually brief and often arrive late in the afternoon or evening.

Humidity rises in May, but sea breezes help make it manageable, especially along the coast.

What the Weather Really Feels Like

Days in May feel like summer is in full swing. It’s hot in the afternoons, but the ocean is the perfect temperature for a swim.

Evenings stay warm, making them ideal for outdoor dining or a sunset cruise.

Rain comes in the form of quick, heavy downpours that often pass just as fast as they arrive.

Humidity is noticeable, but it’s not yet as intense as the peak summer months. You’ll still be comfortable spending the day outside with plenty of sunscreen and water.

What to Pack For a Trip to Cozumel in May

  • Light Jacket or Sweater: You won’t need anything too heavy, but something to protect you from overly air-conditioned restaurants will be handy. I use this lightweight jacket that folds up into its own pouch. It doubles as sun protection.
  • Rain Gear: It’s a good idea to pack lightweight rain jackets or ponchos for sudden downpours.
  • Umbrella: Good to have all year. If you don’t need it for rain, you can use it for shade on hot days. I carry this small umbrella pretty much all the time.
  • Water Shoes: Many of Cozumel’s beaches are rocky and slippery. Water shoes like these are a necessity here.
  • Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, you need sunscreen. Opt for a reef-safe sunscreen to avoid harming the coral.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Cozumel’s water is not safe to drink. Take purified water with you in this reusable bottle that also keeps your water cold. I like it because the lid closes over the straw to keep it clean.

Things to Do in Cozumel in May

Here are some of the best things to do in Cozumel in May:

Cinco de Mayo Celebrations: Although not as extensively celebrated in Mexico as it is in the United States, you’ll still find some festive events in Cozumel during Cinco de Mayo.

Look out for local restaurants and bars hosting special events, offering a chance to enjoy Mexican cuisine and music. Don’t expect these to be authentic Mexican events. They really just have Cinco de Mayo celebrations to keep the tourists happy.

Diving and Snorkeling: May is an excellent time for underwater adventures in Cozumel. The water temperatures are warm and inviting, perfect for exploring the world-renowned coral reefs.

The island is famous for its clear waters and diverse marine life, making it a paradise for divers and snorkelers. You can even snorkel right off the shore in many places.

Beach Time: With the warm weather and before the arrival of the summer crowds, May is ideal for beach activities.

You’ll find many free beaches, as well as full-service beach clubs. I particularly like Buccanos and Paradise Beach. Of course, the island is full of wonderful beach bars to hang out at with amazing views.

Cultural Tours and Mayan Ruins: Cozumel is rich in culture and history. Take a tour to explore the island’s Mayan ruins, such as San Gervasio, an important archaeological site. These tours often provide insightful glimpses into the ancient Mayan civilization.

Nature Parks and Eco-Tours: Explore Cozumel’s natural beauty through eco-tours. Visit Punta Sur Eco Park to enjoy lagoons, beaches, and a chance to see diverse wildlife, including crocodiles and exotic birds.

Punta Sur is the most beautiful spot I’ve seen on the island. It’s worth the trip just to see the view from the top of the lighthouse.

Fishing Tournaments: May is a prime time for deep-sea fishing in Cozumel. Look out for fishing tournaments that attract anglers from all over the world, offering a thrilling experience whether you’re participating or just watching.

Sunset Cruises: With the pleasant evenings, a sunset cruise around Cozumel is a must-do. These cruises offer stunning views of the coastline and are often accompanied by dinner and drinks.

For a unique twist on the sunset cruise, be sure to check out the Cozumel pirate ship. It’s a dinner cruise with some great entertainment!

Safety Tips for May Travel

  • Hurricane Season Awareness: Hurricane season starts in June, but late May can still bring unsettled weather. Check forecasts before you travel.
  • Water Safety: Be cautious on the east side beaches, where rip currents are strong. Pay attention to local warnings.
  • Sun Protection: The May sun is intense. Reef-safe sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are essential.
  • Travel Insurance: Always recommended. May’s quick rainstorms or late-spring weather shifts can affect travel. I recommend SafetyWing for flexible coverage.

Helpful Resources

  • Cozumel Guest Assist App – This app is super helpful. If you need any assistance, including in an emergency, you can get help on the app.
  • The Weather Channel: Good for short-term forecasts, but keep in mind island weather changes quickly.
