Xcaret is my favorite theme park in Mexico’s Riviera Maya. There’s just so much to do.

I lived in Mexico for three years and visited Xcaret several times. I always take friends and family when they come to visit, and everyone’s loved it.

So when’s the best time to go? That depends on the weather, crowds, and special events. Here’s what you need to know to plan the perfect trip.

Best Time to Visit Xcaret

A large rock at the entrance of Xcaret Park in Mexico, engraved with the words "Xcaret! Mexico." The rock is surrounded by lush green plants, palm trees, and a sandy path leading towards a tropical setting with thatched-roof structures in the background.

For me, the best time to visit Xcaret is April. The weather is great and the crowds are manageable.

That said, your ideal time depends on what you care most about, whether it’s sunshine, fewer people, or catching a specific event.

Overview of Xcaret

A performer at Xcaret Park in Mexico, dressed in traditional Mayan ceremonial body paint. His face and upper body are covered in striking white patterns on a dark base, resembling a skull and polka dots. He has an intense gaze, tribal earrings, and a distinctive hairstyle, set against a dimly lit, earthy-toned background.

Xcaret is an eco-archaeological park in Mexico’s Riviera Maya. It’s one of the most popular attractions in the country, blending nature, history, culture, and adventure.

The park takes its name from the nearby archaeological site that was once a Mayan trading port. Today, it celebrates that heritage with 200 acres of jungle, beaches, rivers, and cenotes.

It’s also big on conservation. You’ll see how the park supports local wildlife and ecosystems through on-site programs and exhibits.

Nature lovers can swim in underground rivers, explore cenotes, and snorkel in the Caribbean Sea.

Culture fans can check out live performances, traditional ceremonies, and Mayan village replicas.

Animal exhibits, beach time, zip-lining, and more round out the experience.

Xcaret Weather

A stunning tropical beach at Xcaret Park in Mexico, featuring tall palm trees, soft white sand, and a thatched-roof hut near the shoreline. The turquoise ocean stretches to the horizon, with rocky edges adding texture to the landscape. The bright blue sky with scattered white clouds enhances the serene and picturesque setting.

Weather is a big part of how your day at Xcaret will go. Here’s how the seasons break down.

High Season (December–April)
Sunny skies and warm temps make this a great time to visit. Expect 80–90°F and little rain. It’s the busiest time, especially in January, so book ahead.

Low Season (June–October)
You’ll deal with heat, humidity, and a higher chance of rain, especially in September and October. But the upside is fewer crowds and lower prices.

Shoulder Season (Late April–early June and late October–November)
This is the sweet spot. Good weather, fewer people, and better deals. It’s a great time to visit if your schedule is flexible.

Special Events and Celebrations

Performers at Xcaret reenact an ancient Mayan ceremony, dressed in elaborate costumes with face paint and animal-inspired designs. The central figure wears a jaguar-patterned outfit with black feathered accents, holding ceremonial staffs adorned with hair and bones. Behind him, other performers in tribal attire raise their arms in a dramatic ritual setting, surrounded by stone structures and lush vegetation.

If you time it right, you can catch some pretty incredible cultural events. Here are a few worth planning around:

  • Xcaret México Espectacular (Daily): A massive stage show with over 300 performers celebrating Mexico’s history and culture.
  • Sacred Mayan Journey (Last Fri/Sat of May): A reenactment of a traditional Mayan canoe pilgrimage to Cozumel.
  • Independence Day (Sept 15): Live music, decorations, and fireworks to celebrate Mexico’s independence.
  • Festival of Life and Death (Oct 30–Nov 1): A colorful Day of the Dead celebration with altars, performances, and traditional food.
  • Xcaret Posadas (December): Christmas-themed processions and piñatas in the weeks leading up to the holiday.

Pro Tips for Your Mexico Trips

Do I need travel insurance?

YES. No matter when you visit Mexico, don’t forget to buy travel insurance. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. If you need it once it will pay for itself many times over. I highly recommend Safety Wing. They have a proven track record for customer satisfaction and a variety of coverage levels.

Is it safe to rent a car in Mexico?

YES. Renting a car in Mexico is not only safe, but it’s a great way to explore. Discover Cars is hands down the best rental car company. They check international and local companies to get you the best rates.

Will my phone work in Mexico?

Maybe — It depends on your company, so check with your provider. If you don’t have free service in Mexico, the least expensive option is to buy a Telcel SIM card. As Mexico’s largest carrier, Telcel has the best coverage of any Mexico SIM Cards. I have one and it’s been a lifesaver.

You can also get an eSIM. Airalo has coverage in over 200 countries/regions, including Mexico.

What’s the best way to book my Mexico accommodations?

For Mexico hotels, Booking.com is the best site, but for hostels, check out Hostel World. If you’re considering a Mexico Airbnb, don’t forget to check VRBO, which is often cheaper with more options.

What do I pack for Mexico?

My Mexico packing list has all the info you need on packing for your trip to Mexico.

What’s the best site for great deals on flights to Mexico?

For finding cheap Mexico flights, I recommend using Skyscanner.

Do I need a visa for Mexico?

Probably Not. U.S., Canadian, and most European passport holders don’t need a visa for Mexico. To verify if you’ll need a Mexico travel visa check the Mexican Consulate’s website.
