Are you planning a Mexican vacation and wondering about Cozumel weather in December? You’re in the right place.

I lived in Cozumel long enough to experience all the seasons (twice!), and December is one of my favorites.

The temperatures are comfortable, the humidity isn’t overwhelming, and the festive vibe makes the island feel extra special.

Let’s take a closer look so you know what to expect.

Overview of Cozumel Weather in December

  • Average High Temperature: 83°F (28°C)
  • Average Low Temperature: 68°F (20°C)
  • Average Water Temperature: 79°F (26°C)
  • Average Rainfall: 2.76″ (7 cm)
  • Average Humidity: 77%

December is warm but not sweltering. Evenings are cooler, so you can enjoy a walk along the waterfront or dinner outdoors.

Rain is minimal, and when it does happen, it’s usually a short tropical shower that passes quickly.

A shaded beachside table with wooden chairs sits under a white umbrella, overlooking clear turquoise water where a speedboat cruises by in the distance. Palm fronds hang from above, adding to the tropical, relaxing vibe of the scene.

What the Weather Really Feels Like

December feels like someone set the thermostat to “comfortable.” Days are sunny and warm enough for swimming, snorkeling, and lounging on the beach. Evenings cool off just enough that you might want a light sweater.

Humidity is present, but it’s nothing compared to summer. You’ll feel tropical warmth without constantly craving air conditioning.

And the best part is while much of the world is shivering through winter, you’ll be soaking up sunshine on a Caribbean island.

What to Pack For a Trip to Cozumel in December

  • Light Jacket or Sweater: Evenings and early mornings can be cool. I use this nifty lightweight jacket that doubles as sun protection.
  • Rain Gear: In case of a sudden downpour, pack lightweight rain jackets or ponchos. They come in a tiny pouch that’s easy to have on hand.
  • Umbrella: Good to have all year, whether for rain or shade. I nearly always carry this small umbrella.
  • Water Shoes: Many of Cozumel’s beaches are rocky and slippery. Water shoes like these are a necessity here.
  • Sunscreen: Opt for a reef-safe sunscreen to avoid harming the coral.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Cozumel’s water is not safe to drink. Take purified water with you in this reusable bottle that also keeps your water cold. I like it because the lid closes over the straw to keep it clean.

Things to Do in Cozumel in December

  • Diving and Snorkeling: The water is warm and clear, with great visibility. Palancar Reef is a must. You can find a tour or snorkel straight from shore.
  • Atlantis Submarine Tour: Want to see the reefs without getting wet? This real submarine takes you 100 feet below the surface to spot marine life and even a shipwreck. Read my full review here.
  • Christmas Festivities: Downtown San Miguel lights up with decorations and celebrations. You can attend midnight mass, enjoy local food, or just soak up the atmosphere.
  • New Year’s Eve: The island knows how to party. Think live music, fireworks, and dancing on the beach. Last year I went to Woody’s and it was a blast.
  • Cultural Experiences: Visit the San Gervasio Mayan ruins or the Cozumel Museum. December’s cooler weather makes exploring more enjoyable.

Relax on the Beach: From lively beach clubs like Paradise Beach to quieter spots, December is perfect for a full beach day.

Island Tours: Try a Jeep tour, ATV ride, or zipline adventure. With mild weather, outdoor activities are extra enjoyable.

Hiking: Jungle and coastal trails are great this time of year. You might even spot some local wildlife like crocodiles.

A towering outdoor Christmas tree decorated with ornaments and white marine-themed designs stands beneath a clear blue sky, topped with a large wireframe star. Palm trees sway in the background, and a Mexican flag waves near the waterfront, creating a festive tropical holiday scene.

Safety Tips for December Travel

  • Weather Awareness: Hurricane season ends in November, but it’s still smart to check forecasts before you travel.
  • Hydration: Even in December, the sun can sneak up on you. Drink more water than you think you need.
  • Sun Protection: Use reef-safe sunscreen, wear a hat, and consider UV clothing if you’ll be in the water a lot.
  • Travel Insurance: I always recommend having it. I use SafetyWing since it covers weather delays and emergencies.

  • The Weather Channel: Good for 10-day forecasts, but remember Cozumel weather can change quickly.

Pro Tips for Your Mexico Trips

Do I need travel insurance?

YES. No matter when you visit Mexico, don’t forget to buy travel insurance. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. If you need it once it will pay for itself many times over. I highly recommend Safety Wing. They have a proven track record for customer satisfaction and a variety of coverage levels.

Is it safe to rent a car in Mexico?

YES. Renting a car in Mexico is not only safe, but it’s a great way to explore. Discover Cars is hands down the best rental car company. They check international and local companies to get you the best rates.

Will my phone work in Mexico?

Maybe — It depends on your company, so check with your provider. If you don’t have free service in Mexico, the least expensive option is to buy a Telcel SIM card. As Mexico’s largest carrier, Telcel has the best coverage of any Mexico SIM Cards. I have one and it’s been a lifesaver.

You can also get an eSIM. Airalo has coverage in over 200 countries/regions, including Mexico.

What’s the best way to book my Mexico accommodations?

For Mexico hotels, Booking.com is the best site, but for hostels, check out Hostel World. If you’re considering a Mexico Airbnb, don’t forget to check VRBO, which is often cheaper with more options.

What do I pack for Mexico?

My Mexico packing list has all the info you need on packing for your trip to Mexico.

What’s the best site for great deals on flights to Mexico?

For finding cheap Mexico flights, I recommend using Skyscanner.

Do I need a visa for Mexico?

Probably Not. U.S., Canadian, and most European passport holders don’t need a visa for Mexico. To verify if you’ll need a Mexico travel visa check the Mexican Consulate’s website.
