Thinking about visiting Mexico and wondering about Cozumel weather in October? I’ve got you covered.

I lived in Cozumel for nearly two years and have experienced October’s mix of sunshine, storms, and everything in between.

October is still part of hurricane season, so it comes with some unpredictability. But it’s also warm, quiet, and full of authentic cultural experiences.

If you’re open to a little adventure and flexible with your plans, this can be a great time to visit the island.

Let’s take a closer look at what to expect.

Overview of Cozumel Weather in October

  • Average High Temperature: Around 85°F (29°C)
  • Average Low Temperature: Approximately 75°F (24°C)
  • Water Temperature: Typically near 82°F (28°C)
  • Rainfall: Around 8.9 inches (22.6 cm) on average
  • Humidity: Generally averages about 80%

October can be a little unpredictable. One day you’re soaking up the sun, the next you’re watching dramatic clouds roll in with a downpour. It’s part of the charm if you’re prepared.

What the Weather Really Feels Like

Cozumel in October still feels like summer. It’s warm during the day and comfortably cooler at night. I actually enjoy the late-season thunderstorms. Last year, we had a few impressive ones that lit up the sky.

That said, several days of strong winds shut down the port to small boats. No diving, no snorkeling tours, no ferries. If you’re coming in October, plan for the possibility of last-minute changes and check the marine forecast daily.

But the upside is no cruise crowds, more space at beach clubs, and better deals across the board.

What to Pack For a Trip to Cozumel in October

  • Light Jacket or Sweater: You won’t need anything too heavy, but something to cover up with in overly air-conditioned restaurants. I use this lightweight jacket that folds up into its own pouch. It doubles as sun protection.
  • Rain Gear: Since October is the rainy season, you might want to pack lightweight rain jackets or ponchos for sudden downpours.
  • Umbrella: Good to have all year. If you don’t need it for rain, you can use it for shade on hot days. I carry this small umbrella pretty much all the time.
  • Water Shoes: Many of Cozumel’s beaches are rocky and slippery. Water shoes like these are a necessity here.
  • Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, you need sunscreen. Opt for a reef-safe sunscreen to avoid harming the coral.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Cozumel’s water is not safe to drink. Take purified water with you in this reusable bottle that also keeps your water cold. I like it because the lid closes over the straw to keep it clean.

Things to Do in Cozumel in October

Let’s take a look at some of the best activities for your October visit:

Scuba Diving: Cozumel is a scuba diver’s paradise, with crystal-clear waters and a diverse marine life that’s hard to beat. In October, the water is nice and warm, making it ideal for exploring the world-renowned coral reefs.

For something a bit different, head over to Riviera Maya on the mainland and do some diving in the cenotes. It’s a unique experience that you must try while you’re here.

Snorkeling: If scuba diving isn’t your thing, snorkeling is an excellent alternative. The island’s snorkeling spots are full of colorful fish and coral formations. You can even snorkel right from shore at some of Cozumel’s public beaches.

Día de los Muertos Festivities: As October winds down, events leading up to Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) begin. While it’s officially celebrated on November 2nd, there are many activities held the week prior.

You can experience parades, dance and music performances, altar presentations, skull painting contests, face painting, and traditional food. Be sure to try pan de muerto, sweet, soft bread sprinkled with sugar and topped with dough shapes resembling bones.

Atlantis Submarine Adventure: For a different kind of underwater experience, hop aboard the Atlantis Submarine. This adventure takes you down 100 feet, offering a rare view of marine life and underwater landscapes without getting wet. It’s an ideal activity for those who prefer to stay dry but still crave the wonders of the ocean.

Visiting Beach Clubs: Cozumel’s beach clubs are a highlight, with October’s weather perfect for a beach day. Places like Buccanos and Paradise Beach offer a mix of relaxation and fun.

Safety Tips for October Travel

  • Hurricane Awareness: October is still part of hurricane season. While direct hits are rare, storms can disrupt plans. Stay flexible and monitor forecasts.
  • Travel Insurance: I always recommend it. I use SafetyWing for affordable, weather-related coverage. (Check rates here.)
  • Stay Informed: Use local apps or sites to stay up to date on marine conditions and storm alerts. The port closes often during stormy weather.
  • Water Safety: Be cautious if swimming on the east side of the island. Strong rip currents can be dangerous, especially when the weather shifts quickly.
  • Backup Plans: Have indoor activities in mind. Museums, galleries, and shopping downtown are great options when the sky opens up.

  • The Weather Channel: Offers solid short-term forecasts, but keep in mind that weather in Cozumel can change quickly.
