I’ve been living in Mexico with my dog, Shelby, since 2022. I’ve experienced frustration when she hasn’t been allowed to go places with me. I mean, I don’t travel with her just to leave her cooped up in a hotel room!

From big cities with plenty of parks to smaller towns with scenic walks, you and your dog are sure to find the perfect pet-friendly destination.
I’ve rounded up Mexico’s most dog-friendly cities so you can choose the best place to visit with your dog.
1. Mexico City
Mexico City is a great place for digital nomads and travelers with a dog. If you want to enjoy a meal or a drink with your pup by your side, there are plenty of places that will welcome you both.
Many cafés and restaurants have outdoor seating areas where dogs are allowed, so you can enjoy the city views while grabbing a bite to eat.

Chapultepec Park
Chapultepec Park, Mexico City’s largest and most popular park, is a great place to bring your dog. With plenty of space to run and play, your pup will never be bored here.
And there’s no need to worry about the heat, as the park has plenty of shady areas for you and your furry friend to cool off.
There are some areas where dogs are allowed off-leash. Be sure to check the rules, however, as off-leash days and hours are limited.
Xochimilco
If you’re looking for a truly unique experience in Mexico City, look no further than Xochimilco. This neighborhood is known for its canals, which are lined with colorful boats called trajineras.
Xochimilco is also a great place to bring your dog. There are plenty of boat operators who welcome dogs aboard, and there’s even a special section of the canal reserved just for dogs!

Parque Mexico
Parque Mexico is one of the largest parks in the city, and it’s also one of the most popular with dog owners.
There’s plenty of space for your pup to run around, and there are also several water fountains where they can cool off.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset, so you can come early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day.
And when you’re ready to take a break, there are plenty of benches where you can sit and enjoy the view.

2. San Miguel de Cozumel
I lived in Cozumel with my dog, Shelby, for nearly two years. It’s the most dog-friendly city I’ve lived in since I left California.
Dogs are allowed on the patio of pretty much every restaurant. Some even allow dogs inside.
Shelby loves Cozumel because so many of the people we encounter on the street want to pet her. She’s very popular.
I’ve taken Shelby to the public beaches without any problems. In fact, many other people had their dogs on the beach also. Many of the beach bars and clubs also allow dogs.
Perhaps the best part about living in Cozumel with a dog is that there are very few street dogs. Just beware of dogs on roofs! They don’t hurt anything, but they can scare the heck out of you when they bark as you’re just underneath!

The list of non-dog-friendly spots may be shorter, but here are my favorite places to go with my dog.
Palmeras Restaurant
Palmeras has long been one of my favorite restaurants in Cozumel. It’s located on the main street (Melgar Avenue) across from the ferry terminal. You get great views of the ocean.
Palmeras allows dogs on their patio, which is covered and nice and cool. They have great food and service. I especially love their breakfasts.
Jeanie’s Beach Club
Jeanie’s Beach Club is known for its amazing food. They also have a pretty nice beach you can snorkel from. Access to the beach area is free as long as you buy at least something from the restaurant.
Jeannie’s allows dogs in the outdoor seating areas. It’s a great place for both of you to enjoy the Caribbean Sea.
Recently I took Shelby to Jeanie’s on a rainy day and they let her stay inside with me since the outside patio was closed.
They did mention that this was a one-time thing, so don’t expect it all the time. It just shows how great they are.
Municipal Park (Parque de Municipal Cozumel)
The municipal park in Cozumel is a large park just south of downtown. Dogs are allowed throughout the park.
Within the park is an off-leash dog park. It’s a really nice, new park with benches and lots of shade.
Make sure to bring vaccination records when visiting the park. There is often someone checking to make sure dogs are fully vaccinated.

The Westin Cozumel is one of the best hotels on the island and definitely the best one that allows dogs. It’s located in the North Hotel Zone and is close to many restaurants and beach clubs.
If you plan on visiting Cozumel with your dog, this is the place to stay.
3. Playa del Carmen
If you’re looking for a dog-friendly city in Mexico that’s also perfect for digital nomads, look no further than Playa del Carmen.
This city has it all: beautiful beaches, plenty of co-working spaces and cafés, and a laid-back vibe that makes it easy to feel at home. And best of all, there are plenty of places to take your dog.

Parque La Ceiba
Parque La Ceiba is one of the most popular parks in Playa del Carmen, and it’s easy to see why. The park is beautifully landscaped and filled with trees that provide plenty of shade.
There’s also a large pond where you can cool off on hot days. There’s even a section just for dogs to run around and play.
MVNGATA Beach Club & Rooftop
On Thursdays, MVNGATA Beach Club is open to dogs. You’ll need to buy a day pass to the beach club, but the money you spend on the pass goes towards your food and drinks.
The food here is amazing, and you’ll receive great service while enjoying a beautiful beach day with your pup.
Cebiam Dog Park
Cebiam Dog Park in Playa del Carmen is a great place to take your dog for a walk or play.
The park has plenty of grassy areas, benches, and water fountains for dogs. There is also a small playground area for children.
The park is well-lit and clean, making it a safe and enjoyable place to visit.

There’s nothing better than being right on the beach with your dog. Mahekal is a short walk to 5th Avenue and offers all the luxury you could ask for.
4. Cancun
My dog, Shelby, and I lived in Cancun for a month. I took Shelby nearly everywhere with me, and she was always welcome.
Since so many restaurants are open-air, there is no shortage of places to eat with your dog.
It gets very hot in Cancun in the summer, so be sure your dog is prepared. Dog booties will keep paws safe and cool on hot streets.
I also use this cooling vest for Shelby so she doesn’t get overheated.

Puerto Cancun
Puerto Cancun is a large, open-air shopping center right on the marina where you can shop with your dog. Puerto Cancun has several restaurants and bars.
Most importantly, this is the home of Petco, so if you need to stock up on pet food or supplies, you can bring your dog with you.
Playa Coral
Playa Coral is one of the dog beaches in Cancun. It’s a very nice beach with palapas for shade. There are benches with dog bowls built right in. There are clean public restrooms and a nice deck area. Dogs are allowed only during certain hours.
Isla Blanca
Isla Blanca is another dog-friendly beach. It’s about 30 km north of Cancun. Because Isla Blanca is a little ways from town, it’s a quiet, peaceful beach. Just be aware of turtle nesting season.
In Mexico turtles generally hatch between August and October. Sea turtles are endangered so be sure to keep your dogs away from nesting sites.

Plaza Sania is a beautiful shopping mall with clothing retailers, restaurants, a movie theater, a grocery store, and a pet store.
