Resources

I’ve been traveling full-time for a while now. As a compulsive planner and over-thinker, I can confidently say I’ve rounded up the best travel resources out there.
Best Sites For Cheap Flights
Skyscanner — Skyscanner is great for finding amazing deals on flights.
Way Away — I also like Way Away. They’re a flight aggregator which means they can get great deals. They have an optional membership plan to save even more.
Best Sites For Accommodations
Booking.com is by far the best option for hotels. They even have vacation rentals now so you can find inexpensive longer-term options.
VRBO — For a great selection of vacation rentals, you can’t beat VRBO. They often have lower fees than Airbnb and a higher satisfaction rate.
Hostel World — For a budget stay, hostels are where it’s at. Hostel World has the best selection and prices.
Coliving.com — If you’re looking for long-term coliving accommodations, check out Coliving.com. They have great options worldwide.
Best Sites For Rental Cars
Discover Cars — Discover Cars is my first choice in rental cars. They have the best prices and the best insurance options. I’ve saved hundreds of dollars with them by not overpaying for insurance.
Note about Discover Cars: I’ve noticed that sometimes their website isn’t accurate as far as reviews. Be sure to check Google reviews for the company you’re thinking of renting from to make sure you see what customers have to say.
RentalCars.com — When I’m in a location where Discover Cars isn’t available, I use RentalCars.com. I’ve had only good experiences with them.
Best Sites For Booking Tours
Viator — Hands down Viator is the best. They have tours everywhere. I especially like having all the reviews right there. Plus booking and canceling is a breeze.
Action Tour Guide — I used Action Tour Guide for a tour of Chichen Itza and loved it. They’re self-guided audio tours that use GPS to know where you are so the audio syncs up to what you’re looking at. Highly recommend if you don’t want a traditional tour.
Big Bus Tours — I took a Big Bus Tour in San Francisco and one in New York City. They are by far the best way to see a city. You can hop on and off so you get to immerse yourself in your location as much as you want.
Best Travel Insurance
I never travel without insurance. I’ve needed to use it more than once and it was a lifesaver. I’ve tried several companies and my absolute favorite is Safety Wing. They have consistently high ratings and excellent customer service. Because what’s the point of insurance if you can’t make a claim?
I have also had a good experience with Visitors Coverage. They use a range of companies to get you the exact coverage you need.

Shelby’s Picks: Best Travel Supplies For Dogs
Traveling with a dog comes with a whole new set of complications. Take some of the stress out of your trip with these supplies. All are tested and approved by Shelby!
Best Dog Carrier: PetAmi Pet Carrier
I love this one because it’s a backpack that tilts on its side to fit under the seat on an airplane. It’s the biggest size that fits all airlines’ requirements. (Or at least I haven’t found an airline yet that requires a smaller size carrier – be sure to double-check!)
Best Dog Booties: Breathable Dog Shoes
I live in Mexico and the sidewalks get hot! Some places are also very rocky or have broken glass so it’s important to keep Shelby’s paws protected. These stay on better than other booties we’ve tried.
Best Dog Life Jacket: HAOCOO Dog Life Jacket
Shelby loves the ocean, but I worry about currents and her getting too tired. I like this life jacket because it has a handy strap on top so I can easily lift her onto a dock.
Best Travel Dishes: 2 Pack Collapsible Dog Bowls
I carry two of these collapsible dishes when I travel. When I’m just out and about I still have one in my purse for an emergency drink of water. They’re compact and lightweight.
Best Dog Food Bag: Rezip Pet Food Storage Bag
After having Ziploc bags tear and dog food everywhere, I discovered a better option. This bag has a velcro top making it easy to access Shelby’s food.
Best Cooling Vest: Dog Cooling Vest
Like I said, I live in Mexico. Shelby doesn’t care if it’s too hot for a walk – she wants to go! This cooling vest keeps her from overheating. It’s also vital for when the electricity goes out and we have no air conditioning.
Best Dog Seatbelt: Zhilishu Dog Seat Belt
Shelby prefers to ride on my lap, but that’s not safe for either of us. So she uses this seatbelt in the back seat instead. It snaps into the seatbelt latch, or you can loop it around the headrest.
Best Reusable Pee Pads: Beck’s USA-Made Reusable Pet Pee Pads
Sometimes you just gotta go. I like reusable better than disposable any day. These pads are perfect. They wash easily in the sink and dry quickly.

Pro Tips for Your Mexico Trips
Do I need travel insurance?
YES. No matter when you visit Mexico, don’t forget to buy travel insurance. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind. If you need it once it will pay for itself many times over. I highly recommend Safety Wing. They have a proven track record for customer satisfaction and a variety of coverage levels.
Is it safe to rent a car in Mexico?
YES. Renting a car in Mexico is not only safe, but it’s a great way to explore. Discover Cars is hands down the best rental car company. They check international and local companies to get you the best rates.
Will my phone work in Mexico?
Maybe — It depends on your company, so check with your provider. If you don’t have free service in Mexico, the least expensive option is to buy a Telcel SIM card. As Mexico’s largest carrier, Telcel has the best coverage of any Mexico SIM Cards. I have one and it’s been a lifesaver.
You can also get an eSIM. Airalo has coverage in over 200 countries/regions, including Mexico.
What’s the best way to book my Mexico accommodations?
For Mexico hotels, Booking.com is the best site, but for hostels, check out Hostel World. If you’re considering a Mexico Airbnb, don’t forget to check VRBO, which is often cheaper with more options.
What do I pack for Mexico?
My Mexico packing list has all the info you need on packing for your trip to Mexico.
What’s the best site for great deals on flights to Mexico?
For finding cheap Mexico flights, I recommend using Skyscanner.
Do I need a visa for Mexico?
Probably Not. U.S., Canadian, and most European passport holders don’t need a visa for Mexico. To verify if you’ll need a Mexico travel visa check the Mexican Consulate’s website.
For assistance with all your worldwide visa questions, check out iVisa.
