If you’re considering making the transition into copywriting, you’re in the right place.

I’ve been a freelance copywriter since 2020, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Copywriting is what has allowed me to travel full-time.

It’s a great fit for digital nomads because it pays well and doesn’t require a ton of hours. If you prefer stability, you can also find in-house or agency jobs. Many of them can be remote.

You need to write clearly, concisely, and in a way that matches the brand’s voice. But don’t worry if you’re not there yet. Writing is a skill you can build.

2. Are You Creative and Adaptable?

You’ll write across industries, platforms, and formats. If you like variety and thinking on your feet, that’s a big plus.

3. Do You Like Research?

Good copy is backed by research. You need to understand your audience, product, and market. If you enjoy digging for info and turning insights into stories, you’ll do well.

Copywriting vs. Content Writing

The terms get tossed around a lot.

  • Copywriting usually refers to short-form writing designed to persuade.
  • Content writing typically includes longer pieces, like blog posts or articles.

Most copywriters end up doing both, so in this article, I use “copywriting” to cover all of it.

Freelancing vs. Working for Someone Else

When you’re starting out as a copywriter, one big decision is whether to freelance or work for a company or agency. Both options have their perks and challenges.

Working as a Freelancer

Freelance copywriting offers flexibility and autonomy. As a freelancer, you have the freedom to choose your clients, set your rates, and work remotely.

All you need to get started is a great laptop and some basic equipment.

However, freelancing requires self-discipline, excellent time management, and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Working for an Agency or Company:

If you want more structure, working for an agency or company might be a better option. You’ll usually get a steady paycheck, consistent work, and access to a team for support and feedback.

In-house writers focus on one brand, which helps you get to know the voice and audience.

Agencies tend to offer variety. You might write for several clients in different industries, which is great experience when you’re learning the ropes.

You may not have as much freedom over your schedule or project choices, and not all roles are remote.

But if you like collaborating and want something more predictable, working for someone else can offer stability and growth.

Understanding Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Every copywriter needs to have a solid understanding of Search Engine Optimization. SEO is a process that focuses on improving a website’s ranking in search engine results, which can lead to increased visibility and higher click-through rates.

It involves creating content relevant to the topics people are searching for, as well as the strategic use of keywords.

It also includes optimizing tags, titles, and other elements of the page so they will be read by search engines.

What About AI?

There’s no doubt AI is having an impact on copywriting. Many fear it will replace humans altogether.

However, the truth is AI can’t replace human creativity. At least not anytime soon.

AI has come a long way. It’s gotten better at using specific tones of voice and does a great job of providing a first draft. But copywriters are still needed to edit and refine AI’s output.

How to Land Your First Copywriting Job

First, decide what kind of work you want.

  • Agency: Great for beginners. You’ll learn fast and work on different projects.
  • In-house: Steady work for one brand. Many of these roles are remote.
  • Freelance: Total freedom. Also total responsibility.

Develop a Portfolio of Your Writing

Building an impressive portfolio of writing samples is essential for new copywriters.

But how do you develop a portfolio before you get clients?

Easy. Just start writing!

  • Create your own website. This is how you can showcase your website content skills.
  • Write blog posts for your website using good SEO practices.
  • Write guest posts. Many bloggers accept guest posts. So do many online magazines. This gives you added credibility since you can say you’ve been published.
  • Create mock-ups of marketing materials. You can create anything. Make an advertisement for a particular product you love. Make sure it’s geared toward your target audience.

How to Become a Great Copywriter

In order to be a great copywriter, it’s important to understand the psychology behind what makes people buy. You need to be able to tap into people’s emotions and desires.

Some key things to keep in mind are:

  • People buy based on emotion and justify with logic. You need to make an emotional connection with the reader. Focus on benefits to the reader, not features of the product.
  • Build trust and authority. Include social proof and testimonials to build credibility. Mention your experience and qualifications.
  • Keep your writing simple and clear. Use short, straightforward sentences. Remove unnecessary words and complex language. Speak in a friendly, relatable tone.
  • Create a sense of urgency or scarcity. Give people a reason they need to buy now before the offer expires or supplies run out. This encourages people to take action.
