How to Get From Tulum to Cozumel
Are you looking for the best way to get from Tulum to Cozumel? You’re in the right place. I lived in Cozumel and made the trip several times.
Maybe you’re in Tulum for your vacation and want to take a day trip to Cozumel. Great idea, by the way.
Or maybe you’re wondering if flying into Tulum for your Cozumel vacation is a good idea.
No matter your reason for getting from Tulum to Cozumel, here’s the short answer: The best way is to take the ADO bus from Tulum to Playa del Carmen, then the ferry to Cozumel.
There are some other transportation options, though. Let’s take a look at all the ways you can get to Cozumel from Tulum.

5 Ways to Get From Tulum to Cozumel
All the ways to get to Cozumel from Tulum have one thing in common: You need to first get to Playa del Carmen to catch the ferry.
There is no direct ferry from Tulum. But don’t worry, because it’s quite easy to do.
1. ADO Bus and Ferry
The easiest and cheapest way to get to Playa del Carmen from Tulum is to take the ADO bus to Playa del Carmen. The trip to PDC will take about an hour.
ADO buses are clean, comfortable, and air-conditioned. And they have restrooms. They run between Tulum and Playa del Carmen very frequently throughout the day.
There are two ADO bus terminals in Tulum, one downtown (Centro) and one at the ruins. There are more frequent buses leaving from Centro. I counted 18 departures. There are three from the ruins.
You’ll be let off right downtown in Playa del Carmen, an easy walk to the ferry.
Pro tip: Allow a few extra minutes to grab some gelato after you get off the bus. Aldo’s is on your way to the ferry and so delicious!
You can buy your ticket in advance on Busbud or when you arrive at the station. You’ll generally get the best price if you buy in advance. At the time of writing, tickets range from $70 MXN to $114 MXN. That’s like $4 – 7 USD.

2. Taxi and Ferry
Okay, this one is pretty easy. Hop in a taxi in Tulum and take it to Playa del Carmen. Have them drop you off at the ferry terminal. Then just hop on the ferry.
The biggest advantage of this method is that you can plan your arrival time so you don’t have to wait long for the ferry.
3. Private Shuttle and Ferry
Taking a private shuttle to Playa del Carmen and then the ferry to Cozumel is a good alternative to taking a taxi if you have a big group.
You can prearrange your shuttle to pick you up at your hotel at whatever time you want.

4. Rental Car and Ferry
If you have a rental car, it’s easy enough to drive up to Playa del Carmen. There is parking near the ferry terminal.
Looking to rent a car? I recommend Discover Cars for the best prices.
5. Rental Car and Car Ferry
If you really want to take your car to Cozumel, you can. There is a car ferry to and from Cozumel. It’s run by Transcaribe. The ferry leaves from the port of Sac Tun (Punta Venado Calica) just outside of Playa del Carmen.
You’ll see signs for the car ferry before you get to PDC.
After driving your car onto the ferry, you move into the passenger area, which is air-conditioned and very comfortable. There’s a cafeteria and televisions on board.
The car ferry only runs two to three times a day. It can take several hours to get on board. Unless you’re bringing a car to Cozumel for a very long-term stay, it may not be worth it.
The car ferry has recently started accepting reservations. If you decide to go this route, definitely make a reservation in advance on Transcaribe’s website.

Ferry From Playa del Carmen to Cozumel
Once you get to Playa del Carmen, you’ll hop on the ferry to Cozumel. If you arrive on the ADO bus, go east out of the bus station and walk a block and a half down to the ferry terminal.
You’ll have a choice of three ferry companies: Ultramar, Winjet, and Xailing. One or the other leaves every half hour.
The exception to this is if you’re traveling with a dog over 20 pounds. In that case, you’ll need to take Ultramar or Xailing. Winjet requires dogs to be in a carrier and must weigh less than 20 pounds (including the carrier weight).
The ferries all have snack bars and restrooms. You can choose inside seating with air conditioning or on some ferries, sit upstairs with all the views. Sometimes there is live music upstairs.
If you sit inside, bring a sweater! Every ferry I’ve ridden on is freezing inside.
You can buy ferry tickets in advance, but it’s not necessary. Your ticket will be good for any boat leaving after you buy it. It’s actually better to buy your ticket when you arrive.
The problem with purchasing in advance is that the ferry companies operate independently. A Winjet ticket won’t work on Ultramar.
So if you buy a ticket for Winjet and miss the ferry, you’ll have to wait up to two hours for the next Winjet departure. By purchasing when you arrive you’ll be able to get on the next available ferry.

Getting Around Cozumel
Cozumel is very easy to get around. You can walk, take a taxi, rent a car, book a private driver, or go on a tour.
One thing you should not do is rent a scooter. Sure they look like fun, but they’re super dangerous. Every week there are bad accidents involving scooters.
Walking
Cozumel’s downtown area (also called Centro) is very walkable. Right across the street from the ferry terminal, you’ll find many wonderful restaurants and shops.
There are also a few beach clubs within walking distance, such as Jeanie’s to the south or La Monina to the north.
Taxi
Taxis in Cozumel are inexpensive and plentiful. You’ll find them lined up outside the ferry building. Be sure to agree on the price before you get in.
If you’re getting dropped off somewhere remote, get your taxi driver’s phone number so you can call to be picked up.
Private Driver
For the most flexibility, hire a private driver for the day. You get your own private guide who can recommend places to go or just take you where you want.
Rental Car
There are numerous car rental companies in Cozumel. Rental cars are usually pretty inexpensive. When you get off the ferry, walk straight ahead into the square. You’ll see booths for the different car rentals.
If you’d like to pre-book a rental car, I recommend Discover Cars for the best price.
Tours
Many tours will pick you up right from the ferry terminal. If you’re taking a tour, be sure to check into this option.
