5 Countries That Are Shutting the Door to Americans Living and Working There Right Now

Many Americans have wanted to live abroad for a long time. Some people wanted to live a slower life, others were looking for better job opportunities, and many just wanted to start over in a new place. It used to be easier to move to another country, especially since more people are working from home and countries are offering flexible visas to foreigners.

But things are beginning to shift

Several countries are quietly making their rules stricter in 2025. Some countries are making it harder to get in, others are slowing down immigration, and a few are cracking down on people who break the law. None of this means that Americans can’t come at all, but it does mean that the process is getting harder and less predictable.

There are many reasons. In some areas, governments are slowing immigration because there aren’t enough homes and prices are going up. In some cases, changes in policy are being made because of political tensions or worries about national security. No matter what the reason, Americans who want to move to another country may find that what used to be easy now requires more paperwork, longer wait times, and stricter rules.

Here are five countries where Americans are finding it harder to live and work than before.

The Increasing Number of Americans Moving to Other Countries

More Americans are leaving the US than ever before. Because of remote work, you can live almost anywhere, and a lot of people are taking advantage of that. Some people move because they want to live in a place with lower costs of living, others because they want better healthcare, and many just want to see something different.

The digital nomad lifestyle is especially appealing to younger professionals. They work on the internet and travel between countries, sometimes staying for months at a time. Retirees are also looking into options abroad where their savings will last longer. Families sometimes move to other countries for better schools or safer places to live.

More and more Americans are moving to countries like Mexico, Portugal, and Thailand. Social media has also been a part of it. Travel bloggers often post pictures of beautiful beaches, cheap apartments, and laid-back lifestyles that make living abroad look very appealing.

But this increase in migration is creating pressure. In some cities, rent prices are rising. Locals worry about job competition and overcrowding. Governments are responding by tightening rules and rethinking who they allow to stay long term.

It is not necessarily about Americans specifically, but Americans are definitely feeling the impact.

Japan is changing the rules for getting permission to travel

Americans have always liked going to Japan. The country has a unique culture, high safety standards, and a lot of exciting job openings, especially in technology and teaching. A lot of Americans go to Japan and then decide they want to stay longer.

Japan is getting ready to launch a new system for getting permission to travel called JESTA. People from countries that don’t need a visa, like the US, will have to give their personal information before they can enter the country.

The goal of this plan is to make the country safer and keep people from staying longer than they should. The system isn’t perfect yet, but it does suggest that Japan is increasingly tougher about who can enter.

Japan is also keeping a closer check on tourists who remain longer than they should.  Even little mistakes on documentation or staying too long could lead to significant problems.

People from the United States who want to live or work in Japan need to plan beforehand. It’s still feasible to do the process, but it’s getting harder and less flexible.

Canada Is Slowing Down Immigration

For a long time, Canada has been one of the easiest and most appealing places for Americans to move to. It has a culture that people are used to, good healthcare, and a good quality of life. A lot of Americans think Canada is an easy place to move to because they speak the same language and are close by.

But Canada has been slowing down the growth of immigration lately

This doesn’t mean that Americans can’t come, but the government is making it harder for new immigrants to get in. The goal is to make it easier for people to get housing, health care, and public services. Rent prices and populations have been going up in cities like Toronto and Vancouver.

These changes also affect temporary workers and international students. Programs that once offered quick entry are now becoming more competitive and slower.

Americans hoping to move to Canada may face longer wait times and stricter application requirements. It is still possible, but it is no longer as quick or easy as it once felt.

United Arab Emirates Strict Legal Environment

The United Arab Emirates, especially Dubai and Abu Dhabi, has become a popular destination for Americans. Many people move there for business opportunities, tax free salaries, and modern lifestyles.

Russia is having problems with its politics

Russia and the US have had a complicated relationship for a long time. These issues are making it harder to get a visa and go on vacation.

Russia has said that the US is an unfriendly country, which means that more rules can be put in place. Americans can still get visas, but the process is often slower and less certain.

Changes in policy that happen without warning are also possible. Politics can quickly change the rules for travel. When things aren’t clear, it’s harder to make long-term plans.

People from the US still go to Russia for work or personal reasons, but they usually have to get ready and get legal advice first.

Americans can still live in Russia, but it’s not as easy as it used to be.

China is making it easier for tourists, but it’s still not safe

It looks like China has changed some things recently to make them more welcoming. Getting a tourist visa is easier, and some people can stay in some cities for a short time without a full visa.

But living in China for a long time still has its problems

The US government has said that there may be legal problems. While their legal problems were being worked out, some Americans had to stay home or couldn’t leave the country. These things don’t happen very often, but they still scare me.

China is still a good place to work and do business, but Americans who want to stay there for a long time should know about the risks.

In this situation, it’s very important to plan ahead and know the laws in the area.

Why Countries Are Getting Tougher

There are a number of reasons why countries are making immigration rules stricter.

One big reason is that there aren’t enough places to live. High demand has caused rent prices to go up in popular cities, which has made people who live there mad.

Also, people are worried about the economy. Some governments are concerned that foreign workers could displace individuals who are currently seeking employment.

Political tensions between countries can also have an effect on policies. Security concerns, diplomatic disputes, and global uncertainty all affect immigration decisions.

Over tourism is another issue. Popular destinations are trying to manage crowds and protect local communities.

All of these things are making it harder to get in and stay for a long time.

What Americans Should Look Forward To

More and more Americans who want to live abroad need to be flexible. Immigration rules can change quickly, so what works today might not work next year.

It’s important to keep up with things. You can avoid surprises by checking official government websites, following embassy updates, and talking to immigration experts.

Planning ahead is also helpful. It’s easier to get through the process if you have backup plans and know about the different visa options.

You can still live in another country, but you need to plan ahead and be more patient.

Conclusion

Living overseas is still a dream for many Americans, and it remains possible. But countries like Japan, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, and China are making the process more complicated.

These changes are a result of rising housing costs, political tensions, and more people moving to new places. Governments are trying to find a middle ground between being open and meeting local needs.

Preparation is more important than ever for Americans who are thinking about moving. Doing research, making plans, and knowing the laws in your area can mean the difference between a smooth move and problems you didn’t expect.

The door isn’t all the way shut, but it’s not as wide open as it used to be.
